Why take IELTS?

IELTS is widely accepted as a proof of English language ability by educational institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, the European Union and other countries.

IELTS is also required for emigration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

About the Exam

Candidates are tested in four areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The listening and speaking modules are the same for everyone, but the choice of reading and writing modules is determined by the purpose for taking IELTS.

If you plan to do academic study, it is recommend that you take the Academic modules.

If you are applying for non-academic training or emigration you normally need to take the General Training modules.

Exam fee:

The fee for the test is 335 BGN (Three hundred and five Bulgarian leva) Pay the fee by bank transfer or in cash at British Council Sofia.

How to register for the exam:

OPTION 1: You can now register online by visiting the British Council website. You can choose a date and fill in all of the information online instead of an application form. You will still need to print out the registration summary page and send it to us by post, together with a copy of your ID card/passport, two photographs and proof of payment by bank transfer. You can also scan and email the above documents to us, but you must bring the two photographs with you at the day of the test.

OPTION 2: Complete the Application Forms in person, OR send a person with a notarised written agreement and a copy of your ID card or valid passport. You need:

  • the addresses of the institutions requesting your test results
  • two recent photographs with your signature on the reverse side
  • a passport/ID card
  • and a receipt for paid test fee or a copy of your bank transfer document

OPTION 3: Alternatively, you can register by post (preferably registered mail or courier) by sending the completed application form to the British Council, two passport-size photos with your signature on their backs, a clear copy of your ID or valid passport and bank statement for the transfer of the fee.
